Appliqué Kitty Cat

Appliquéd Kitty Cat
This is my first attempt at appliqué. My pal Anna (who is quite pregnant) and I have been getting together for some good old fashioned girl gabbing and craft making, something I enjoy very much.

I am fairly pleased with the results of this experiment, but I thing next time I will be a little less color crazy with the thread and keep to two basic colors; a light thread for dark fabrics and a dark thread for the light fabrics. I feel I overdid it with the colors…it’s really bugging me, and I am this close to unraveling the entire thing and starting over. But I think I will just move onto the next project, that’s probably a smarter idea. Click on image for larger version.

Scuba-Man meets the Sad Octopus
It has been a long while since I have posted for Illustration Friday. I’ve been busy with work and such, but I wanted to get back in the IF routine.

This piece, titled Scuba-Man Meets the Sad Octopus is my first painting completed in a long, long, loooooong while, so I am giving myself a big ole pat on the back :) Created using watercolor and archival ink on paper.

In other unrelated news, today is my birthday. So happy birthday to myself… and thanks to all my fancy friends and family who sent me their good wishes. You’ze all made my day ;)

IF: Signs

heart = love
When I was a kid I loved to play with dolls. Stuffed or Barbie dolls, it didn’t matter. My toys helped me to go into that creative happy place in my head where I was at peace. Sadly as an adult I don’t go to that place as much. So this post is dedicated to my dolls, which I loved (the heart symbol is a sign of love for all you Illustration Friday folk) so much in my childhood. And here’s a wish to all, that we can find our way to our creative happy place even once in a while :) Dolls rock!

The Quetzal of Costa Rica

May 15th, 2007

Quetzal
This is a portion of an acrylic painting I did a little while back of the beautiful Quetzal (which I have yet to see here in Costa Rica). The full picture has a teary woman watching the bird. I gave this painting to my good friend Anna, from Switzerland, who was just married…yay. My husband Pedro and I were the witnesses, a great honor indeed…and we ate loads and loads of Japanese food. Ricisimo!

With approximately 850 recorded bird species, the country boasts one-tenth of the world’s total. More than 630 are resident species; the remainder are occasionals who fly in for the winter. Birds that have all but disappeared in other areas still find tenuous safety in protected lands in Costa Rica, though many species face extinction due to deforestation. The nation offers hope for such rare jewels of the bird world as the quetzal and the scarlet macaw, both endangered species yet commonly seen in protected reserves.
